What is a TPI Physical Screen?

This is a golf specific physical screen. There are twelve screens in total that look at an individual’s movement patterns throughout various parts of the body, testing mobility and stability, and providing a clear picture on how we move. These screens have been developed, evaluated, and measured over thousands of golfers of all abilities by the experts at TPI (Titleist Performance Institute) and the pass ranges have all been measured on the averages of the worlds best players.

Should I have a screen, will it benefit my game?

Understanding how you move and seeking advice from a TPI Certified Professional on how this relates to your golf swing is extremely important. Have you ever worked on a technical position or a movement in your golf swing? Have you ever found certain positions always felt difficult or challenging to achieve no matter how much practice has been done? Or that your progress has been slow no matter how hard you have practiced?

What if physically you have not been able to do that movement because your current movement patterns don’t allow it? Don’t you think knowing this first would have been useful. Like all coaching systems, whether it be Trackman, pressure mats or 3D swing analysis, information gathering is critical, so that the plan moving forward can be effective in helping an individual play better golf.

I’ve failed some of the tests, does this mean I can’t swing the club effectively now?

Absolutely not, but it does mean you won’t be practicing something your body isn’t able do at this time. From the screening, plus other analysis that may be available, such as data from a launch monitor, pressure mats and 3D analysis, there are two main decisions to make:

Option 1. Choosing corrective exercises by your TPI Certified coach through the TPI software or advice on a golf specific training program from a TPI Certified Fitness Professional. The corrective exercises along with practicing prescribed motor learning drills from your golf coach work together to help improve your technique.

Option 2. Is to build an effective and efficient golf swing around the way your body moves now, without any corrective exercises. Building a swing that works individually for you.

The key thing here is understanding each individual golfer and tailoring coaching programs to their needs and goals. This is effective coaching to better help students play better and more enjoyable golf.
