Why should I wear a golf glove?

Well, there are several reasons why wearing a golf glove is important, that you may have not realized:

  • Better control of the club.

Having a good solid hold of the golf club is very important when we swing. A golf glove is far more tacky than human hands, which is great for keeping a better hold of the club. Also, hands are prone to sweating in hotter conditions or under pressure, modern golf gloves absorb perspiration and stop the hands from slipping.

  • Reduces tension.

The glove provides a much more secure hold off the grip/club than our hands would. As a result, less grip pressure and tension are needed in the hands. This is great for freeing up mobility, reducing tension, helping rhythm, and maintaining speed in the golf swing.

  • Protect your hands.

Repetitive hitting of golf shots can cause calluses and blisters to develop or even skin splitting. A golf glove provides a barrier from the friction of the grip and the hands when hitting lots of golf shots.

  • Moisture control.

Most modern-day golf gloves have moisture control, and materials which absorb perspiration keeping the glove tacky with good grip, not slippery with sweat as hands would.

  • Better golf.

With the points mentioned above, wearing a golf glove will help make better swings more consistently and help play better golf.

Ok this is interesting, but why do I only use one glove?

It’s not just because that’s what everyone does. The main reason is our lead hand (left hand) for a right-handed golfer, has the whole hand in contact with the club/grip, so making sure the hold is secure with this hand is extra important. The trail hand (right) for a right-handed golfer, partly holds the lead hand and the grip and therefore isn’t as important. Also the trail hand can be very important for feel in the golf swing and not wearing a glove can help with this.

Why are there different prices for gloves?

Well golf gloves can vary in price from £10 up to £25, so what’s the difference. What extra features do I gain when I spend more money on my golf glove?

  • All weather gloves provide soft feel and good durability £10
  • Premium leather gloves at £25 provide exceptional soft feel, performance, and durability. Improved comfort and better fitting. Softer feel and maintained soft feel round after round. The very best in comfort, breathability, and flexibility.

Any golf glove you wear is going to be a benefit to your golf game, the features listed above show the difference from entry level up to the premium gloves and there are plenty of options in between.

How do I know the right size of gloves?

Well, the golf glove should be not too tight it feels restrictive, but it should be snug. Most golfers tend to wear golf gloves that are too big, this won’t help the gloves’ durability and will cause more friction and the glove to wear much quicker. My best advice for the correct fit, you want it snug and if you make a fist before closing the Velcro, if the fit is right, it should close somewhere halfway across the velcro to sealing fully. It should NOT seal beyond the Velcro of the glove; this would be too big.

Looking after your golf gloves

The durability of your golf glove will be affected by the quality of the golf glove you buy, but here are a few tips to help your glove last longer:

  • Buy 2 or 3 gloves at a time and rotate them regularly. If you’re playing 18 holes, after the 9 holes swap and change to another glove. This reduces the wear on one glove, if your hands are prone to sweating more, rotating gloves every 6 holes can be beneficial.
  • Have a practice glove. If you like to practice regularly. Keep a bag of your old gloves and use these when you practice, keep your newer gloves for when you play.
  • When it rains don’t wear an all-weather or leather glove, swap this for rain gloves. Rain isn’t great when it comes to the durability of your gloves, also they don’t perform as well as rain gloves in wet conditions. Have in your bag a couple of pairs of rain gloves and 3-4 all-weather/leather gloves, this is great for helping your gloves last longer.
  • Having the right size of glove, gloves too big will rub more on the grip creating more friction and cause holes to appear sooner.
  • Having a good hold of the golf club. One of the biggest causes of holes wearing in a glove is a poor technical grip. If you want your gloves to last longer having a lesson with your PGA Pro can make a big difference not only to your gloves lasting longer, but it will also benefit your golf game.
